About: How Zone Proxima Math Works

Let's let YOU describe the Zone Proxima Math experience.

Please watch these five VERY short videos of a five-year-old and her mother. The segments were excerpted from Zone Proxima Math lessons conducted using Zoom. What do you observe?

You will watch raw data documenting the Zone Proxima Math home school experience. At Zone Proxima Math, we specialize in guiding each child-parent dyad toward episodes of fruitful cognition. We celebrate these achievements. Watch the evidence-of-cognition revealed in the videos below. Zone Proxima Math mentors teach you how to create positive, affirming, and effective learning experiences between you and your young child. They lead your child along the path of a flourishing life.

The Joy of Guided Discovery Learning

Note: When this clip begins, the child is working and there is no audible sound. The child speaks before the clip ends.

This child had begun to discover the foundations for many concepts, such as evens, counting by two, factors, multiples.

Zone Proxima Math builds the number sense that characterizes top mathematics achievers. Zone Proxima learners make numbers their friends.

For math strugglers and those who engage math as a procedural activity, math is a big, empty hole. Zone Proxima dyads (child and parent), construct deep, rich, concrete mathematical connections.

As one middle school learner exclaimed while studying with Dr. Reese: "It's all connected!"

Problem-Solving: Concrete to Abstract

Like all Zone Proxima Math students, this child will actually solve, read, and write algebraic equations before she calculates using numbers!

Persistence - Self-Regulation - Tenacity

Zone Proxima Math guides young children to recognize, value, and strive for the productive behaviors essential to learning and lifelong success.

Raising and educating a child today presents new-found opportunity. It also carries daunting challenges for parents, educators, and ultimately--for our young people. Zone Proxima specializes in motivating the positive choices that lead to academic and personal fulfillment.

Dr. Reese invented and developed Metaphorics and Flow techniques through NASA and National Science Foundation funding. Zone Proxima Math applies those technologies to early childhood mathematics.

Intrinsic Motivation

Zone Proxima Math guides children to construct and recognize  the pleasurable rewards of effortful cognition (deep learning).

Founder Debbie Denise Reese, PhD, conducted extensive NASA- and National Science Foundation-funded research investigating the connections between learning environments (feedback scaffolding), channels of experience (e.g., flow), and competencies essential for 21st Century  success (e.g., persistence). This research undergirds Zone Proxima Math.

Metacognition

and Friends

Child: Self-Regulation, Rewarding Satisfaction of Accomplishment

Parent: As exciting to TEACH as it is to learn.

Metacognition: When instruction integrates metacognitive experiences children learn better and prepare to make better life decisions. Metacognition is awareness of and knowledge about one's own cognition: thinking about one's own thinking. It includes attending, remembering, communicating, problem solving, and evaluating.
